Mosque, Al Hasa

Total Area:
Location: Al Hasa, Saudi Arabia
Project Year: 2020

In Islamic culture, the mosque is a cult building that represents vernacular historical values. We tried to outline its main features in the design. A single-story 21 meters height construction is surrounded by a rhythmically folded stone arcade- the reference to classical mosques. The simplicity of shape evokes a sense of spiritual connection between the earthly and the divine and emphasizes its holiness.

A shell of the building embodied by a massive stone wall is a sort of protection for the inner prayer hall. Inspired by Kaaba, where a rectangular stone building is covered in black cloth and decorated with gold ornaments, we formed the two-layer metaphor. Metal-profiled panels covered with bronze highlight the greatness of the mosque. We likewise used plants to decorate surroundings, highlighting the centuries-old traditions of beautiful gardens lost among architectural structures. Space near the mosque serves as a recreation space for Imam.

At night the prayer hall and the top of the minaret are illuminated with vertical spotlights. An infinite light beam initiates a connection between the physical and metaphysical worlds. The crescent moon is placed in the transparent glass enclosure- a shrine accessible to everyone. This allegory makes the mosque even more impressive.
